Gallantry and Meritorious Service Awards Roll

I am pleased to announce that  a new and very important roll has now been added. It lists names of those awarded medals and citations for bravery and meritorious long service. Importantly this will provide a unique record of those who received such awards and will enable you to research further some of the fascinating and at times jaw-dropping accounts (particularly those relating to gallantry), via the links provided, within the roll itself. The roll has been broken down into two parts:  Gallantry Awards and Meritorious (Long-Service) Awards.

An Index is also available for download, for these Gallantry and Meritorious (Long Service) Awards.

Gallantry awards and citations:Noteworthy is one Victoria Cross (V.C.) holder, but you will also see awards for bravery across the arms of the forces.
Examples are: the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.), The Distinguished Conduct Medal (D.C.M.), the Military Cross (M.C.), the Military Medal, (M.M.), the British Empire Medal (Military) (B.E.M. (Mil)), the Military Service Medal (M.S.M.) and many Mentions in Despatches (M.I.D.).
Unique to the air-force and the navy there are the likes of the Distinguished Service Cross (D.S.C.), the Distinguished Flying Cross ( D.F.C.) the Distinguished Service Medal (D.S.M.) and the Distinguished Flying Medal (D.F.M.).

Across both rolls you will see awards from foreign countries; Commander of the Bath (C.B.), Air Force Cross, (A.F.C.), Legion of Honour, (Leg. Honeur), Croix de Guerre, Soviet Order of the Red Banner, (O.R.B.), Legion of Merit (L.M.), Greek Military CrossGreek Medal of Service, and the Greek Commendation Medal of Merit and Honour. Some of these awards were made more than once to the same person.

Meritorious/long service awards:

In the case of this class of awards, these have been listed where the award was received during wartime, or subsequently, where such service was also seen to encompass wartime service.

Recipients of campaign medals are not listed for obvious reasons (all servicemen received these), nor are commemorative medals, whether from within NZ, or overseas, or civic awards.
You will still see these other awards in the details column of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. and Other Forces Rolls.

In this category you will see Order of the British Empire military (O.B.E.) (Mil.) and Member of the British Empire military (M.B.E.) (Mil.) featuring; along with British Empire Medal (B.E.M.) again, the Efficiency Decoration, (E.D.), Efficiency Medal, (E.M.) and the Air Efficiency Award (A.E.A.). As with the Gallantry Awards some recipients received the award twice, or even three or four times, so you may see the notation, x 2, x 3, x 4 or ‘and Bar’.

This roll has been kept simple, as I felt there was no point in doubling up on some of the information, found in the other rolls. I originally looked to incorporate ‘Rank’ and even ‘Unit’ at time of receipt of the award, but that was not easy to ascertain for some of the awardees and so was dispensed with.

The columns:

Column A: Surname (where with an * this means killed or otherwise died on active service).

Column B: Christian name

Column C: Award details

Column D: Alias

Column E: Service number

Column F: Links to details of the citations and awards, or other sources pointing to the award made.

Any entry highlighted in yellow in the Details column means I need to return to this.

Note: I had looked to incorporate rank at time of award being made, but this proved problematic, so was dispensed with.

    Hi Kathryn,

Thank you for sharing this information.

The only entry on the NZ Death Index I was able to find for a Henry Herbert was for one Henry Sefton Herbert, but his year of birth is shown as 1903 and his year of death as 1989. Can you please confirm for me if this Henry Herbert was your grandfather? I ask because you mention your grand-dad died in 1988.

Have you seen the information about your grandfather in the 2nd N.Z.E.F. Roll, as well?
