Other Resources

Take a Look at These

These are just a few resources I have found online which may prick your interest.

Contributions on Northland Cemetery records  on Internment.net.

New Zealand Genealogy Online Data New Zealand Cemeteries. In addition to an extensive list of links to the many council operated and other cemetery databases online, one useful resource I have noted is a memory tree.co.nz, which purports to record over 90% of all deaths. I ran a couple of checks using the Northern Advocate but was unable to track anyone who had died prior to 2006. Having said that, I can see it will have some uses. Another is Tributes Online .

The Genealogical Computing Group also has a link to various cemetery records as do Kiwi Celts and the Norsewood Cemetery Project.

A page devoted to Northland and Bay of Islands Genealogy has some useful links .. especially the various cemetery links and the link to the War Memorials Register, Northland. PS: There are also links to other registers throughout the country in the sidebar.

The Whangarei Libraries Family History page and especially useful the libraries’ pointers to all that is available in their Microfiche Collection . I recall using this many years ago and if my memory serves me right, Births, Deaths and Marriages can be searched alphabetically.  There is a lot of information to be found here including the New Zealand Expeditionary Force World War II Nominal Rolls.

A listing of Maori Cemeteries in New Zealand.

A little bit of a background to Whangarei’s Parihaka (Parahaki) memorial to those who served and fell in World War II.

Information on Northland’s coastal fortifications including the gun emplacement.

An article in the Northern Advocate dated 3rd March 2014 on the proposed move of the Rose Street World War I memorial and construction of a new memorial honouring all who died on active service during wars in which New Zealand has participated. The memorial has now been dedicated and so timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Anzac troops landing in Gallipoli. Hopefully I have been able to assist in some small way by making available to Ian Reid of the Whangarei RSA, some of the information I have on my database.

The feedback on the Freedom’s Call website and the Roll, received from Mr Reid has been especially supportive and uplifting.

The World War II Historical Re-Enactment Society

How the Second World War impacted upon us at home

An example of the wealth of information available from Papers Past online, featuring an account of one of Northland’s sons, Capt. B D Gerard, relating his escape from captivity in Italy.

An excellent source of information for those wanting to find out more about those taken as prisoner of war.

In my opinion membership of the NZ Society of Genealogists is mandatory, if you wish to avail yourself of the best possible research tools available. Links to the Northland branches of the Society are available here.

A few years back I made available to all branches and the Head Office of the Society, copies of the Roll on CD, together with a supporting pdf. The Roll has of course, been updated extensively, since then.

If you are right into World War II history and happen to live in Auckland, and are wanting information on the particular battles, or are keen to delve through biographies and personal reminiscences, or general overviews of the New Zealand military, then search under World War 1939-1945 on the catalogue page of the Auckland Libraries website. You should also check out the excellent history.net.nz website.

Here you will find an interesting article in the Northern Advocate supplied courtesy of Daryl Wakelin.
