Auckland and Hamilton Cemeteries

Expanding Further Out

In the course of working my way down the list of names on the Freedom’s Call Roll of Honour, where the Whangarei and Far North District Cemetries Indexes yielded no results, I expanded out to run checks to see if the names appeared on the Auckland and Hamilton cemetery databases. This seemed sensible, given that post war it was likely that while many Northland vets might not move too far away, some would inevitably choose to settle in the Auckland or Waikato regions.

As regards Auckland, the main cemeteries included: Hillsborough, Waikaraka, Otahuhu, Symonds Street, North Shore (Schnapper Rock), Birkenhead/Glenfield, Wellsford, Port Albert, Warkworth, Matakana, Waikumete, Manukau Memorial Gardens, Papatoetoe, Purewa, Papakura, Waiuku and Pukekohe.

I found that  a number of vets lay in some of the smaller council operated cemeteries too, e.g. Onetangi Lawn.

For Hamilton,  Hamilton Park Gardens, Hamilton East and Hamilton West were the cemeteries of focus.

It came as rather a surprise to find out just how many vets lay in cemeteries outside and yet to so close to Northland.
